Requirements for Gas or Liquid Storage Tanks

Effective Immediately

All tanks must comply with the 2021 International Fire Code*, the appropriate National Fire Protection Association standard, local rules, regulations, and ordinances. All new and tanks-to-be-replaced LPG tanks must be permitted through respective building department prior to installation and inspection by the fire department.

*IFC 6103.1 LP-gas equipment shall be installed in accordance with the International Fuel Gas Code and NFPA 58, except as otherwise provided in this chapter (IFC Chapter 61).

Step 1: Obtain Permit Through Teton County Building Department

Per Teton County Floodplain Permit Application Information and Submittal Requirements, gas or liquid storage tanks must be elevated or flood proofed within the 100 year floodplain. View Teton County’s Floodplain Permit Application Information and Submission Requirements (PDF). View guidance regarding proper anchoring of tanks in the floodplain (PDF).

Installers are to insure anchors and straps are non-corrosive in local soils. Information regarding tie downs for LPG tanks can be found online at Tie Down (PDF) and Ray Murray (PDF). This office does not design anchoring systems for underground tanks. All products used to anchor must be approved for underground installation. Tanks must meet ASME container assemblies intended for underground installation (NFPA 58, 6.6.6).

Step 2

Receive approval for designed anchoring system from Teton County Building Department. All holes having water must have anchored tanks, whether or not within the flood zone. The 100 year floodplain can be identified online. Review by County Flood Plain Specialist will be required.

Any hole accepting an LPG tank that accumulates water will be required to be secured whether or not it is within a flood zone. This is critical to keep the tank from moving. (NFPA 58, 6.6.1.6 Where necessary to prevent flotation due to possible high flood waters around aboveground or mounded containers, or high water table for those underground and partially underground, containers shall be securely anchored.)

Step 3

Schedule an inspection with the Fire Department. All tanks are required to be inspected by the Fire Department before covering. Sand or lighter fill is acceptable to surround the LPG tank. Review may be required by the Teton County Building Department and the Teton County Planning and Engineering Departments should a Floodplain Development Permit Application be required.

Tanks cannot be inspected until these steps, when necessary, are taken. LPG line-only inspections will be performed by a building department inspector. Please call for an inspections at 307-733-4732 with 24 to 48 hours advance notice for scheduling purposes.
